Comment Is Free – Israel’s ‘Security Wall’

I don’t think I ever posted this. It may have had something to do with me doing stuff for Guardian Unlimited at the time….

Apols for the lack of posting recently – I’m a bit under the weather but hope to be back posting soon.

I’m supposed to be on a short visit to Scotland right now but thanks to monumental failures by easyjet and Luton Airport, I was unable to travel the other day.
Fair enough, flights get cancelled. Easyjet advised those people who checked in at their desks but totally forgot to advise those who used their ‘advanced’ online checking in system which means that you print your own ticket at home and proceed directly to the departures gate.
Unfortunately, no boards are visible from the area where hundreds of travellers had to congregate and Luton Airport allowed the various announcements in different languages to overlap, so hardly any message could be distinguished.
The security staff told me that the airlines refused to send staff out to the security cordon to address the passengers and only passed on information on flights that were due to board. They did not pass on any cancellation details.
The police stepped in to help out as best they could and did a damn good job considering there was little or no co-operation from the airlines.
After a couple of hours of waiting I eventually gave up and went to the easyjet desk where I found out about the cancellation but, by then, it was too late to organise a flight from another airport.
I passed on the cancellation details to the police who made the announcement at the departures cordon and then strolled outside, just in time to see large lumps of ice falling from the canopy at Luton Airport. No barriers, no warnings. Lucky someone wasn’t badly hurt.

Never again.

Rant ends.
